Powell began his music career while he was still in high school. He became a member of a band called Nuclear Hoedown alongside his childhood friend Lee. With this experience, they formed their own band called Third Day and began writing Christian songs. As a producer, he has Co-producer on Fusebox’s Once Again album in 2004 and Revive’s Chorus of the Saints album in 2009.

Powell together with guitarist Mark Lee formed the Christian band Third Day.
