Can you believe that a decade has passed since the pineapple appeared in the pilot episode of Psych? And what a legacy this show has left after the eight seasons that it’s been airing…
The crime-comedy based show was about Shawn Spencer, an extremely intelligent and observant person. Shawn would tip off the Santa-Barbara police department about various cases after following the stories on the local news channel. In the pilot episode, he shows up to the precinct after leaving an accurate tip about a stereo shop robbery. In fact, the tip was so accurate that the police department called him in for questioning, because the guy who did it (the store’s manager) wasn’t working alone. Shawn knew all the information that only the perpetrator would know, which is why he was labeled as the lead and only suspect. He was seconds away from being arrested, so he had to come up with a believable story on how he got the information.
“I got the information because… I’m a psychic.”
And that’s how it all started.
Shawn used his observatory skills to put together an act and he immediately made assumptions about the people around him, tricking all of them into believing that he’s an actual psychic. He consulted his best friend, Gus, and by the end of the episode they opened up a psychic private detective agency named “Psych”.

The pineapple
It was there from the very beginning. In the very first episode, actor James Roday had improvised a scene, and it marked history. He grabbed a pineapple after an intense argument and said “Should I slice this up for the road?”
Thus creating history.
Obviously the producers loved it, as did the fans, and the pineapple became a symbol of the show. So since that happened, you can spot a pineapple (or something related to in) in literally every episode, even if it’s just for a few seconds.
The humour
Shawn’s comedic character was a key factor of Psych, and it’s probably the main thing that kept the views up.
Without his witty comments and childlike behaviour, this would’ve been just another crime show. His mind was always quick to come up with a clever or comedic response, and this was part of his charm.

The relationships between the characters
First and foremost, you had Shawn and Gus, the ultimate bromance goals.
There was a chemistry on set that the actors, James and Dulé, perfectly portrayed. The reason behind this is, as they’ve mentioned during an interview on the Today Show, was because the chemistry was there almost from the very beginning, when they first met and got to know each other. In the show the characters had grown up together, and watching James and Dulé in action you’d often have to remind yourself that the pair didn’t actually know each other for very long before the shooting started. Ten years later the duo is still going strong, and we couldn’t be happier.
While Shawn and Gus were always on the spotlight, other characters are also what made the show awesome. Juliet O’Hara (Maggie Lawson), Carlton Lassiter (Timothy Omundson), chief Vick (Kirsten Nelson), and Henry Spencer (Corbin Bernsen), Shawn’s dad.
Shawn had a unique relationship with each of these characters, whether it was a good one (i.e. with Gus, Juliet, and chief Vick) or a bad one (i.e. with Lassiter and his dad).
The (frequent) guest stars
Here’s a bit of trivia- did you know that almost every member of The Breakfast Club appeared on Psych? Ally Sheedy was Yang, a pretty mentally unstable serial killer who had an open opsession with Shawn. Anthony Michael Hall portrayed the new intern chief of police, and unlike Sheedy, he despised both Shawn and the rest of the crew. Molly Ringwald played a nurse at an mental institution which Shawn had to intrude in order to solve a case for Lassiter. In season three, Shawn had a picture of Judd Nelson at his high school reunion party, and in season four Judd himself played a nutty doctor after a virus was let loose in the city. The only member of the popular 80s film that wasn’t on the show was Emilio Estevez, and we don’t know how to feel about that.
Other than them, the audience’s favourite guest stars were Pierre Despereaux, a con artist, Curt Smith, playing himself. Declan Rand, played a character that was named Shawn 2.0 because of his abilities which were similar to Shawn’s.

If we were forced to pick one thing that truly made the show as brilliant as it was, it would be the people who’ve worked on it. The actors, the writers, the producers, the directors, the guest stars, and everyone that ever worked on Psych deserves a massive shoutout. All of these people can pat themselves on the back knowing that they’ve done an amazing job at bringing this show close to our hearts.
Every member of the crew that has been there for the ride was featured on the second to last of episode of the show. This was a farewell for all of the cast and crew, and even though the episode was about zombies, it was pretty emotional behind the camera lenses.
